Australia continues to support academic excellence in Laos

(KPL) An Australian-sponsored student, Keovina Kingvongsa (Amp), was awarded a certificate of achievement for obtaining the highest score of any student in the Asia-Pacific region for the "Globalisation" subject of the Monash University Foundation Year studies course. Each year, over 2,000 students across the region undertake the foundation studies course.

According to the source from Australian embassy, Amp, who is currently undertaking an academic preparation course at Vientiane College before she departs to Australia on an Australian Development Scholarship (ADS), said, "I am really happy that I received a high score for the Globalisation subject. This gives me the encouragement to continue to work hard with my studies so that I will be prepared for study in Australia. I hope that my achievement will also encourage the rest of my class so that they can achieve good results as well.""Supporting education in Lao PDR is a priority for the Australian Government because it contributes to broad-based economic and social growth," said Mr. Tim Napper, Second Secretary, Australian Embassy. "Scholarship awardees like Amp are an investment in the future of the Laos and Australia is proud to play a part in the development of her potential".

Australia's longstanding scholarship program is a key element of Australia's support to Laos. The scholarship program, funded through Australia's Agency for International Development (AusAID), helps to directly address skills shortages within Laos and to improve capacity across government departments and the private sector. The program equips future leaders with the skills to advance reform, development and governance in Lao PDR.

Since the ADS program in Laos began in 1989, over 700 Lao awardees have successfully gained tertiary qualifications in Australia. In 2008, over 100 exceptional Lao students are studying in Australia with Australian scholarships.
