Russia to celebrate Navy Day
MOSCOW, July 27 (Itar-Tass) - Russia will celebrate Navy Day, which is one of the first state professional holidays established back in 1939.
The Russian Navy should be revived, "so that Russia would be a maritime and naval power," Dmitry Medvedev said during his trip toMurmansk at the beginning of the year. "This work is underway, maybe it is slower than we would like to do it, but we got down to it for the first time in the last 20 years," he said.
On the eve of the holiday Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Vladimir Vysotsky noted that the Russian Navy, which "is one of the symbols of national character," "includes the nuclear deterrence forces and the general purpose forces that are quite powerful and capable to give an adequate response to any threats."According to Vysotsky, the Russian Navy renovation program envisages the construction of "new nuclear-powered strategic missile cruisers, multi-purpose submarines, frigates, corvettes, landing ships, minesweepers, combatant crafts and supply vessels." "In the future the fleet will have more powerful ships - modern multi-purpose fleet destroyers and aircraft carriers, as well as vessels of other types.
The relevant works have already begun," the Navy commander said.
He earlier emphasized that the Navy command believes it necessary to have 5-6 aircraft carriers. According to him, "The project 955 leading nuclear-powered submarine cruiser, which is equipped with new ballistic missiles, is planned to put into service soon."This year Russian ships performed several responsible missions during the international exercises Northern Eagle, Baltic Operations (BALTOPS), Black Sea Harmony, Black Sea Partnership Cruise, BLACKSEAFOR and Caucasus-2008. A voyage of the maneuver group of Russian Northern Fleet's warships to the Northeast Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea was one of the main events in the Russian Navy at the beginning of 2008.
According to the Navy commander, the Northern Fleet, which has the sea strategic nuclear forces, surface vessels and submarines of all classes, the deck aviation and the coastal troops, "will keep performing a very important mission to ensure security in the high seas in north-western Russia."In June 2008 warships of the Northern Fleet participated in the major international exercises Bold Monarch-2008 off the Norwegian coast. The Northern Fleet resumed its presence in the Arctic region to ensure security of the Russian navigation, particularly off the Shpitsbergen Archipelago. A big anti-submarine ship Severomorsk and the missile cruiser Marshall Ustinov are fulfilling these missions at a high level.
On the eve of Navy Day warships of the Northern Fleet rticipated in the Russian-US-Norwegian naval exercises Northern Eagle-2008 in the Barents Sea. The US guided-missile frigate Elrod and Norwegian patrol boats Senja and Nordkapp participated in the war games. They are also taking part in the Russian Navy Day celebrations. The British destroyer Exeter called at Severomorsk to participate in the Russian celebrations.
In Severomorsk on the holiday the best Russian naval officers will be awarded with the medal "Pendant Cross of Admiral Nakhimov".
Representatives of the Club of Commanders and the Nauka-21 Foundation will present the medal. Meanwhile, they will hand over to the Russian Northern Fleet headquarters a unique relic - the authentic pendant cross of Admiral Nakhimov.
The Russian Pacific Fleet will celebrate the holiday from Kamchatka to the southern Primorsky territory.
A naval parade will be held in Vladivostok, the main naval base of the Russian Pacific Fleet. For the first time a naval parade at the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Naval Base will be held at the Ozernovskaya Spit in the central part of the city.
Warships are standing in line in the Avacha Bay for a naval parade. In the Sovetskaya Gavan military district a parade will be held on the Primorsky Boulevard in the settlement of Zavety Ilyicha and in the Postovaya Bay in the Sovetskaya Gavan Harbor.
In July 2008 the Russian Pacific Fleet held the exercises in the East Sea (Sea of Japan) involving more than 20 supply vessels and deck aviation. The crews performed successfully about 50 various exercises, including missile and artillery live fire exercises. Soon one of Russian Pacific Fleet's ships will participate in the quadripartite exercises FRUKUS-2008.
A group of minesweepers of the Russian Baltic Fleet will take part in the international exercises of minesweepers Open Spirit-2008 in the Baltic Sea in August 2008. During a voyage warships of the Baltic Fleet, including the Nastoichivy destroyer flagship, the Geizer small-size missile ship, the Morshansk missile boat, have recently visited the ports of Sweden, Poland, Denmark and Finland. The Neustrashimy patrol ship participated in the ship parade Rouen Armada-2008.
After the long voyage the Baltic seamen put in order their ships and are standing in line for a naval parade. The parade will be held on the sea channel of Baltiisk, the main naval base of the oldest Russian fleet.
The warships will sail at the stands, perform missile and artillery live fire exercises, a mock attack on a submarine by a group of anti-submarine ships, a minesweeping operation for a free access of a submarine to the naval base and will land marines and military hardware on the coast.
The Ladny patrol ship of the Black Sea Fleet will perform a mission in the Mediterranean Sea during the anti-terrorist operation Active Endeavor in August 2008.
On Navy Day the foresaid patrol ship took a place in the first line of the naval parade in the Sevastopol Bay, where Russian Black Sea's warships will hold a full-scale naval parade despite all political clamor.
Thirty warships, 10 auxiliary vessels, 20 pieces of military hardware and a unit of marines will participate in the parade. Warships, which were involved in the large-scale exercises Caucasus-2008, will take part in the parade.
The oldest Russian rescue vessel Kommuna will stand in the thirdline of the parade for the first time. St. Andrew's Flag was hoisted on this rescue vessel 93 years ago.
One of the most spectacular shows of the holiday will be 33 divers, who will go out from the sea like ancient Russian heroes from the fairytale. They will train diving at small depths and will show the capabilities of the diving equipment.
A festive concert will be given, and bright fireworks will be performed on the Nakhimov Square on Sunday evening.
Massive celebration will be held in Moscow on Navy Day at the cityparks Kolomenskoye, Izmailovo and Sokolniki. A water and sport show will be staged in the Russian capital on the Grebnoy channel in the Krylatskoye district. Various performances of actors and athletes, the Rimsky-Korsakov Naval Orchestra, demonstration fights of commandoes are on the agenda of the festivities.
On Saturday, military seamen of all generations were honored at the House of Moscow Government, where a ceremonial meeting was held involving senior naval officials and naval veterans.
