PM Dung tours Bac Lieu, Soc Trang provinces

Bac Lieu (VNA) - Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung advised Bac Lieu and Soc Trang provinces to capitalise on their advantages of rice and shrimp farming to develop production models combining agriculture with processing industry.

He made the suggestion at working sessions on July 27 with leaders of the two localities, which are part of his Mekong delta tour that aimed to enquire into socio-economic performance in the area the first half of theyear and its plans to fulfill the tasks of the second half.

The PM asked Soc Trang provincial authorities to ensure that local people, especially the poor and Khmer people, who account for 30 percent of theprovince's population, benefit from social welfare policy.

He said as poor households still make up 18 percent of the province's population, the provincial authorities should mobilise different sources to make life better for those poor people and closely supervise the implementation of policies in support of the poor and ethnic minoritypeople.

The PM asked Soc Trang authorities to focus on removing difficulties in raw materials, labour and loans for businesses, especially for those involved in seafood processing, to raise production in the second half of the year, while increasing agricultural promotion activities, the application of new scientific advances and new varieties of plants and animals, and the safeuse of fertilisers to maximise farming productivity.

He also requested close inspection of the disbursement of the Government's preferential loans for processors to buy 'tra' and 'basa' catfish stockpile from farmers. At the same time, the province must speed up the construction of Government-funded projects and continue with measures to curb inflation,he said.

At the working session with Bac Lieu authorities, PM Dung called on the province to use its own budget to raise the quality of education and training and healthcare services and promote scientific and technologicalapplication in aquaculture.

He asked the provincial authorities to continue to implement solutions to rein in inflation, concentrating on resolving difficulties for farmingactivities and seafood export, and caring for the life of the poor.

The Government leader hailed Bac Lieu province for improving local people's living conditions remarkably as the number of poor households in thelocality was reduced to 10 percent.

Bac Lieu province posted a GDP growth rate of 9.8 percent in the first six months.-Enditem
