UAE, GCC to view solar eclipse Friday
Abu Dhabi, July 28, 2008 (WAM) - UAE Astronomy Society has announced that the UAE, Gulf residents and other countries in the region will view partial solar eclipse Friday, as the eclipse will cover Oman, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, eastern parts of Saudi Arabia and northern parts of Jordan and Palestine.
Mohammed Shokat Awda, chairman of the Islamic project for moon sighting,said the solar eclipse will take place in the UAE from UAE 2:45pm- 4:10pm.
It is set to shadow 20 per cent of sun's disc, adding that the solar eclipseoccurs "when the moon passes in front of the sun. Hence, overshadows the sun".
The solar eclipse viewers are reminded to use proper observation equipment to protect their eyes and avoid any potential harm to theirretinas while watching the natural phenomenon.
