RENEW COMMITMENT TO CREATE A PROGRESSIVE NATION: M`SIAN DPM
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 17 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin
Yassin Thursday called on Malaysians to renew their resoluteness to create a
progressive and united nation by maintaining closer relations between one
another.
He said that as citizens who loved the nation, Malaysians should not allow
regional sentiments to hinder efforts towards enhancing national integration and
spurring national development.
"Remember that the development and progress that we are enjoying today had been
achieved through solidarity and cooperation that we have nurtured as Malaysian
citizens regardless of ethnic differences and regional boundary all this while.
"Avoid the trap of enmity deliberately set by certain groups who are playing on
extreme racial and regional sentiments purely for their narrow political
interest," he said in his message in conjunction with the Malaysia Day
celebration, which was e-mailed to Bernama, here Thursday night.
He said that the success achieved and contribution made by the people of various
races and religions which had brought glory to the nation should not be used as
an excuse for them to be complacent.
Muhyiddin said Malaysia had evolved as a united, peaceful and prosperous nation
- thanks to the close cooperation among the people regardless of ethnic,
religious and regional boundaries.
"States that were previously backward and left out of the mainstream of
development are now flushed with infrastructural, educational and economic
development.
"In the spirit of distinct federalism, not only the executive and
legislative powers between states and federal are separated by mutual
agreements, state revenue collections are also shared and distributed fairly for the
benefit of the people," he said.
The leaders and nation builders have established Malaysia 47 years ago with a
desire and determination to strengthen unity among the people of different
races, religions and regions, and developed the country together, he added.
"Thanks to their untiring efforts, Malaysia has emerged as the most
successful nation in the past four decades," he added.
