Sheikh Zayed's initiative would have saved Iraq: Arab League Chief

Kuwait - July 30, 2008 (WAM) - Secretary General of the Arab League (AL) Amr Mousa said the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan's initiative back in 2003 for the then Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to step down to avoid a possible war against Iraq would have averted many evils that have now riddled Iraq and the whole region.

The late Sheikh Zayed made the proposal for Saddam to go into exile at an emergency Arab summit in Sharm el-Shaikh just weeks before the US-led war began in March 2003, said Mousa in a lenghty interview with Kuwait's Awan daily. "I totally agreed with Sheikh Zayed. He was right ...Although the situation was quite complex and tricky, we could have avoided all that, hadwe taken that decision and implemented it," remarked AL chief.

"A major lesson for us Arabs to learn from this is that we have to sit downand engage in candid talk to agree on some strategic steps," added Mousa.

Ever since I took office as Secretary General, Mousa said, I have been asking member Arab member states to pump funds into official funds that are outside the League's official budget and I managed to get enough funds to save the League. "The United Arad Emirates was among those Arab states who helped (save the League) alongside Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman."
