INDONESIAN PROTEST CAN AFFECT GOOD TIES - M'SIAN DPM
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 24 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin
Thursday condemned Indonesians for protesting in front of the Malaysian embassy
in Jakarta on Wednesday as it can affect good ties.
He said the Indonesians should not have protested as Malaysia has a legal
system where those responsible for crimes like abuse could not escape
punishment.
"Abuse victims will be protected. This is the Malaysian government
assurance," he told reporters after representing the prime minister in opening
the Asian Development Bank/Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development
Anti-Corruption Initiative for Asia and the Pacific 10th Regional Seminar on
"Criminalisation of Bribery" here.
Muhyiddin was commenting on the Indonesians protest outside the embassy and
residence of ambassador Syed Munshe Afdzaruddin Syed Hassan against the
abuse of a maid in Malaysia.
The People's Bastion for Democracy (Bendera) said it would stop Malaysians
from shopping at Senayan City and ask them to leave Indonesia.
Maid Win Faidah,26, was physically and sexually abused by her employer for
four months. A couple had been detained by police on Sept 19 in connection
with the case.
Muhyiddin said the government would implement the law so that those
responsible would be charged in court.
"I don't endorse such things and condemn acts that can affect others."
He said Malaysia-Indonesia problems should be settled diplomatically to
ensure continued good ties betwen both countries.
