YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, July 30 (Itar-Tass) - An earthquake measuring 4.9 points on the open-ended Richter scale occurred on the night from Tuesday to Wednesday on the island of Iturup, which is part of the Southern Kurile chain.
Its epicenter was located 110 kilometers away from the town of Kurilsk and the seismic focus, at the depth of 50 kilometers below the surface of the Earth, sources at the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy ofSciences said.
No quakes were felt in the Kurilsk, the biggest population center onIturup.
