Fukuda indicates he will reshuffle Cabinet in near future
TOKYO, July 31 Kyodo - Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda indicated Wednesday he will reshuffle his Cabinet in the near future after two ministers return home Thursday from the World Trade Organization talks in Geneva.
Fukuda suggested to reporters that he would reach a conclusion after he receives reports from the two ministers ''who were negotiating for more than a week without time to sleep.''Earlier in the day, Liberal Democratic Party Secretary General Bunmei Ibuki indicated that Fukuda would make a decision as early as Thursday about whether to reshuffle the Cabinet.
Speaking to reporters after his meeting with Fukuda in the afternoon, Ibuki said the prime minister told him that he would consult the LDP on the issue after he hears about the WTO negotiations.
The two ministers -- Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Masatoshi Wakabayashi and Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Akira Amari -- will return to Japan on Thursday afternoon and are scheduled to report to the prime minister about the negotiations.
There is a prevailing view within the ruling coalition of Fukuda's LDP and the New Komeito party that the reshuffle of the Cabinet will be implemented Monday, according to political sources.
Fukuda will also decide on when to convene an extraordinary session of the Diet after holding discussions with members of the ruling parties.
Fukuda has repeatedly said he is working with a clean slate on the issue of a Cabinet reshuffle. He inherited many Cabinet members from his predecessor Shinzo Abe.
On Wednesday morning, senior members of the ruling coalition parties met at a Tokyo hotel and agreed to discuss when to convene the extraordinary Diet session after Fukuda reshuffles his Cabinet.
