China always glad to receive Russian tourists
BEIJING, July 31 (Itar-Tass) - China is always glad to receive Russian tourists, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao told reporters on Thursday in comments about the temporary confiscation of the foreign travel passports from a group of Russian tourists, who arrived to vacation on the Hainan island.
The Chinese diplomat noted that he was not aware of this incident and doubted that the incident had ever taken place. "I believe that the authorities of the Chinese province are interested in a greater number of tourists, therefore I doubt that the information is correct," he said.
"Meanwhile, I would like to note that China is always glad to receiveRussian tourists and guests from other countries, particularly during the Olympics," the spokesman said.
Liu Jianchao could not comment on the question whether the temporary confiscation of passports from foreign tourists is legal, but he pledged "to get in touch with the agencies concerned and clarify this issue." Some Russian media outlets reported that the local authorities confiscated temporarily the foreign travel passports from a group of Russian tourists, who arrived on Hainan. So, the Russian tourists were deprived of an opportunity to travel freely inside China. The localauthorities explained this action regarding Russian tourists by tougher security measures ahead of the Olympics.
