Japan's Crown Prince attends coronation of Tonga's king
NUKU'ALOFA, Aug. 2 Kyodo - Japanese Crown Prince Naruhito attended the coronation of King George Tupou V of Tonga at a church in the South Pacific kingdom's capital of Nuku'alofa Friday.
The crown prince in a morning suit sat in line with the king during the coronation. Over 1,000 people, including representatives from the Thai andBritish royal families, attended the ceremony.
The king assumed the throne after his father and previous King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV died at age of 88 in September 2006, but the coronation was not carried outuntil Friday.
The Japanese crown prince attended the state funeral of the previous king as well.
Crown Princess Masako is not accompanying him on this trip.
Crown Prince Naruhito will return to Japan on Sunday.
