July new auto sales rebound 5.4%, Honda sees sharpest rise

TOKYO, Aug. 2 Kyodo - New automobile sales other than minivehicles in Japan posted a solid 5.4 percent rebound in July from a year earlier to 302,568 units, up for the first time in three months, an industry body said Friday.

The Japan Automobile Dealers Association traced the rebound partly to good sales of some fuel-efficient minivan models introduced by Honda Motor Co. and Mazda Motor Corp.

It also cited last year's sales dive resulting from an earthquake that struck Niigata prefecture at that time. The quake forced a suspension in operations of a Riken Corp. factory that has supplied key auto parts to all of Japan's 12automakers.

The association said passenger car sales climbed a strong 9.3 percent to267,725 units, accounting for more than 80 percent of the overall auto sales.

But truck sales declined 17.6 percent to 33,615 units with trucking companies shying away from purchasing new models due partly to price markups by HinoMotors Ltd. Bus sales dived 14.7 percent to 1,228 units.

In terms of engine size, sales of cars of over 2000 cc rose 11.7 percent to 117,941 units, while those of cars of smaller engines rose 7.5 percent to149,784 units.

Four of the five major Japanese carmakers -- Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co., Mitsubishi Motors Corp., Nissan Motor Co. and Mazda Motor Corp. -- sawyear-on-year sales rises during July, with Mitsubishi the sole loser.

Toyota sold 139,669 vehicles, up 5.6 percent. But sales of the automaker's top-of-the-line Lexus brand, which are not included in the Toyota figure, plunged 34.5 percent to 1,788 units.

Nissan sold 50,098 units, up 5.9 percent, Mazda 19,111 units, up 8.7 percent, with Honda selling 40,449 units, up 29.1 percent and the sharpest year-on-yeargain among the five rivals.

Mazda sales received a boost from the new minivan Freed, while Honda sales werestoked by the popularity of the new Biante minivan.

Mitsubishi suffered an 8.1 percent sales fall to 5,926 units.

Meanwhile, the Japan Mini Vehicles Association said that sales of minivehicles of up to 660 cc eked out a 0.1 percent gain to 152,026 units, waging a reboundfor the first time in 16 months amid the gasoline price upsurge.
