STRONG HUMAN CAPITAL NEEDED TO ACHIEVE DEVELOPED NATION STATUS

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20 (Bernama) -- Strong human capital is the most important asset needed for a country to achieve developed nation status, said Institute of Islamic Understanding (IKIM) chairman Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

The former prime minister also said strength in human capital lies in a person's ability to master knowledge in various aspects that can be beneficial to the individual, family, community and country.

"In this matter, we need to have mental strength because handling so much knowledge is not easy," he told reporters after launching a 'Putting Mental Health Ahead of Current Challenges' seminar here Tuesday.

Human capital strength is also based on strong morals, without which it could lead to abuse of the knowledge obtained.

"A lot of smart people become cheats and criminals...what's the point of having such people.

"They are not the human capital that we can be proud of or be of use to the nation," he said, adding such things would only embarrass a country.

Abdullah said physical health was also an important factor in producing quality human capital who are able to contribute to various fields.

"We not only want a physically fit and healthy body to help us become knowledgeable people, but to also allow us to work with diligence," he said.
