KHALED HOSTS DINNER FOR DELEGATES OF ISLAMIC CONFERENCE

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20 (Bernama) -- Higher Education Minister Mohamed Khaled
Nordin tonight hosted a cocktail dinner for delegates of the 5th Islamic
Conference of Ministers of Higher Education and Scientific Research (ICMHESR) at
the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), here.

The delegates, from 48 countries, are attending the three-day conference which
began Tuesday, to discuss on various issues related to higher education and
scientific research, in the Muslim world.

The three-day conference was co-organised by the Higher Education Ministry, Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation with the cooperation of Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ISESCO).

At the dinner, the delegates were exposed to the Malaysian diversity in the areas of food, art and music such as 'gamelan'.

"This evening's dinner and show has been organised to initiate you into the realm of local cuisine and culture," he said.

Meanwhile, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia lecturer Prof Dr Mohamed Amin Embi today won the Islamic Educational Scientific and Cultural Organistion's (ISESCO) Science and Technology Prize 2010.

A Professor of Technology in Enhanced Learning at the Faculty of Education, UKM, Prof Mohamed Amin won the ISESCO Prize in Technology and received a gold medal, US$5,000 (RM16,000) and a certificate.

The prize was presented by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin at the opening ceremony of 5th Islamic Conference of Ministers of Higher Education and Scientific Research (ICMHESR) at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) here.

Dr Mohamed Amin was the founder of numerous educational portals including virtual teacher education centre.

In the Biology category, Dr Hossein Baharvand, 38, from Islamic Republic of Iran, Associate Professor and Head of Department of Stem Cells Biology and Developmental Biology at Royan Institute who had established the first mouse and human embryonic stem cells in Iran in 2003 won the prize.

For the category of Chemistry, Prof Dr Mirsaidov Ulmas, 65, from the Republic of Tajikistan won the award for becoming the first person in Tajikistan to begin Systematic Investigations of the Light Metals and Energetically Capacious Materials while another winner was Prof Dr Muhammad Qasim Jan, from Islamic Republic of Pakistan, who won the ISESCO Prize in Geology, while Dr Odibat Zaid from Jordan won in the Mathematics category.
