African swine fever kills a thousand pigs in North Ossetia

VLADIKAVKAZ, North Ossetia, August 3 (Itar-Tass) - The government of the North Caucasian Republic of North Ossetia has announced a state of emergency over an African swine fever epidemic.

Vladimir Ivanov, the republic's deputy minister for emergency
situations, said on Saturday that the government had already signed a
resolution introducing the state of emergency in the territory of North Ossetia.

Seventeen populated areas in North Ossetia have already decided to
destroy their swineherds.

According to the epidemic liquidation committee, 1,049 animals have died of the African swine fever and up to 18,000 pigs are to be
slaughtered in the infection-stricken areas.
