S. Korea's recalled ambassador to return to Tokyo on Tuesday+

SEOUL, Aug 5 Kyodo - South Korea's ambassador to Japan, who was recalled after Japan renewed its claim to a pair of South Korean-controlled islets, will return to his post Tuesday, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said Monday.

''Ambassador Kwon Chul Hyun, who was temporarily recalled on July 15, will return to his post on Aug. 5,'' Moon Tae Young said at a press briefing. Kwon has ''completed all scheduled consultations about related works at home and thus he will go back to his post tomorrow,'' Moon said.

The ministry spokesman said that after returning to Tokyo, Kwon will stress that Japan's decision over the islets is ''hard to understand'' and ''urge Japan to take measures in a more sincere manner for a future-oriented partnership between South Korea and Japan.''Japan's decision to include a claim to sovereignty over the islets for the first time in a teaching guideline for junior high schools sparked a storm of protests in South Korea.

The islets, which are located in what South Korea calls the East Sea and Japan calls the Sea of Japan, include surrounding reefs and cover a total area of 210,000 square meters. They are known as Dokdo in South Korea and Takeshima in Japan.

The islets have been the subject of a long-standing dispute between the two neighbors.
