United Nations Volunteers donate blood

(KPL) United Nation's Volunteers, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and World Health Organization (WHO), in cooperation with the Lao Red Cross, hosted a Blood Donation Day and it was held in the new UNDP building on 1 August.

The UN staff attended to the blood donors and they passed the message to them on the need for regular and voluntary blood donation in Laos.
"Safe blood saves million of lives each year.

It has been shown all over the
world that regular, voluntary blood donation by low-risk donors is a key to
saving lives. Lao Red Cross National Blood Transfusion Centre promotes blood
donation based on voluntary non-remunerated blood donors to ensure that the
blood supply is safe, adequate and available to meet the needs of all
patients.
Therefore, we need your support in donating your gift of life. Give blood
regularly, once is not enough" said Dr. Chanthala Souksakhone, Head of
Preparation for Supply and Training for Lao Red Cross and National Blood
Transfusion Centre.
He also said that universal access to safe blood would reduce the burden of
transfusion-transmissible infections especially HIV, hepatitis B and
hepatitis C and it would facilitate safe motherhood and promote patient
safety in developing countries.
" I'm very proud that UNV are supporting the Lao Red Cross in our blood
donation drive," said Ms. Elizabeth Bransfield, Programme Officer for the
United Nations Volunteers in Laos. "It's a tribute to the many volunteers
both national and international here in Laos who work to support sustainable
development. Giving blood saves lives, it's as simple as that, and I am
tremendously gratified with the level of response from our staff. The UN
Dispensary Physician. Dr. Ben Burford also encourages everyone who can to
donate blood to do so regularly and so help the people who need it.
Individuals who weigh at least 45 kg and meet other donor requirements may
be eligible to donate blood.
Those interested in donating blood are encouraged to contact Lao Red Cross
