M'SIA EXPORTS 4,600 TONNES OF FISH PRODUCTS TO EU SINCE MAY 2009

KUANTAN (Malaysia), Nov 25 (Bernama) -- Malaysia exported 4,600 metric tonnes of fish and fish products worth RM62.7 million (US$20 million) (US$1=RM3.13) to the European Union (EU) since May last year.

The country's fish and fish product exports to EU met the food standards required by EU, said Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai at the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority complex here Wednesday.

He was speaking to reporters after the launch of approval logo to export fish and fish products to EU. Present was Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Minister Noh Omar.

"In 2008, we did not achieve the requirement and food standards set by EU," Liow said.

He said the export of fish and fish products processed from local
aquaculture production resumed on May 14 while the export of seafood products was allowed from Sept 8 last year.

Malaysia took only 11 months to comply with EU standards, he added.
