.Turkmen president to Beijing to attend Olympics opening ceremony.
ASHGABAT, August 7 (Itar-Tass) - President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly
Berdymukhamedov will fly to Beijing on Thursday to attend the opening
ceremony of the XXIX Summer Olympic Games.
The Turkmen sportsmen will appear at the opening in suites made from
the national silk cloth -keten - of greenish colour, the same as the
national flag. The Turkmen national team comprises 10 sportsmen. They will
compete in six kinds of events - swimming, judo, bullet shooting, track
and field, weightlifting and boxing. The national team's captain is
renowned sportsman - vice champion of the Asian Games 2002 in Busan (South
Korea) and winner of the bronze medal of the World Universiade 1996 in
Quebec judoka Guvanch Nurmukhamedov.
The Turkmen athletes so far have no Olympic medals. Officials at the
country's State Sports and Tourism Committee and the National Olympic
Committee said that the biggest hopes are pinned on the 26-year-old
students' world champion of 2004, bronze medallist of the Asia
weightlifting championship of 2008 Umurbek Bazarbayev (62 kg). The Beijing
Olympic Games will be the third Olympics in his career.
