SC INKS MOU TO STRENGTHEN TIES WITH QATAR FINANCIAL MARKET AUTHORITY

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 4 (Bernama) -- The Securities Commission (SC) Friday
signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Qatar Financial Market
Authority (QFMA) to strengthen cooperation and develop deeper ties between the
two capital market regulators.

The MoU also reiterates both parties' commitment to enhance cross-border
enforcement and enhance overall investor protection, it said in a statement.

The SC said the MoU establishes a framework for assistance and mutual
cooperation to facilitate supervision and enforcement of the respective
capital markets in Malaysia and Qatar, exchange of technical knowledge and
collaboration in areas of mutual interest between the two regulators.

"In an increasingly complex financial environment, it is important for
regulators to continue to strengthen their cooperative networks through greater
information sharing and collaboration in capacity building," said SC Chairman
Zarinah Anwar.

"The MoU clarifies the importance of the exchange of technical support
between the authorities on matters relating to the regulation of the securities
industries," said QFMA chief executive officer Nasser Ahmad Al-Shaibi.

"The authorities will also work together to determine the training and
technical needs for the development of the stock markets of both countries,
subject to availability of appropriate expertise and resources," he said.

The SC is committed to strengthening international cooperation in securities
regulation and has signed 29 MoUs with its regulatory counterparts since 1994.

The SC is also a signatory to the International Organisation of Securities
Commission's Multilateral Memorandum of Understanding, a global
information-sharing arrangement among securities regulators.
