Indonesian Nurses Arrive in Japan

Tokyo, Aug 8 (Jiji Press) - The first batch of Indonesian nurses and caregivers allowed to work in Japan under a bilateral economic partnership agreement came to Japan Thursday.

Some 100 such Indonesians arrived at Narita International Airport near Tokyo in the morning, and 100 others are scheduled to arrive in the afternoon.

They are the first foreign workers Japan fully accepted in the medical and nursing care fields under an EPA.

The 200 Indonesians are expected to be placed at 97 contracted hospitals and nursing homes in February next year after taking Japanese language lessons for six months.

While working as helpers and unqualified staff, they will seek to get Japan's nurse and caregiver licenses.

Until they obtain the licenses, the nurse hopefuls are allowed to stay in Japan for three years and care worker candidates for four years.

Japan is also ready to accept nurses and caregivers from the
Philippines under a separate EPA. But the pact has yet to be ratified by the Philippine parliament.
