PERLIS, SOUTH AUSTRALIA SEEK EDUCATION, SPORTS LINKS

ADELAIDE, Dec 10 (Bernama) -- The Crown of Prince of Perlis, Tuanku Syed
Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, is heading a Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP)
delegation to South Australia on a weeklong visit to establish cooperation in
education and sports.
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra, who is chancellor of UniMAP, held a meeting
today with South Australia Education Minister Jay Weatherill.
He said South Australia had good English Language teachers as well as
excellent sports coaches, and Perlis would strive to benefit from their
expertise.
He said UniMAP wanted to widen its scope of cooperation with tertiary
institutions in Australia after having established links with the University of
New South Wales and La Trobe University.
The cooperation included student, staff and cultural exchange.
"We need more professors, professionals and experts in technology," he said.
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra said UniMAP had an Agro Tech station in Sungai
Chuhoh and such expertise could be harnessed through the research cooperation
with tertiary institutions.
The Crown Prince also said that cooperation in trade between Malaysia and
Australia could also be developed.
He said the volume of trade between January and August this year had risen
by 20.5 per cent to RM22.96 billion (US$1=RM3.14) compared to RM19.28 billion in
the corresponding period last year.
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra is accompanied on the visit by his consort,
Tuanku Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil, and UniMAP Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr
Kamarudin Hussin.
Thirty-one members of the UniMAP Student Representatives Council are also in
the delegation, and they will engage in several activities in Australia. The
delegation will also visit Warrnambool and Melbourne.
