S Ossetian villages Sarabuk, Dmenis come under artillery fire
TSKHINVALI, August 7 (Itar-Tass) - Fire has been opened on the Dmenis and Sarabuk villages of the Tskhinvali district of South Ossetia from the Georgian populated locality Karbi. According to South Ossetian Interior Ministry officials, "seven artillery pieces and five tanks are shelling" the villages.
The information and press department of South Ossetia reported with reference to the Defence Ministry of the unrecognised republic that one resident of the Dmenis village has been wounded. Three residents of villages, including an aged woman, were injured during shelling of the Ossetian villages of Khetagurovo and Ubiat on Wednesday.
Last Friday and in the small hours of Saturday, Georgia mounted an
intensive fire attack on South Ossetia. The South Ossetian military
returned fire. Six were killed and thirteen others injured. Over the past several days alone five heavy fire attacks were registered. The last one continued for ten hours. As a result of actions by Georgia ten people were killed and twenty others injured over the past month. Women and children are being evacuated from South Ossetia.
The Abkhazian authorities have warned they may open a second front
against Georgia in case of war in South Ossetia. The two self-proclaimed republics are signatories to an effective treaty on mutual military assistance, which also allows them to turn to a third party, say, Russia, for assistance.
Abkhazian Defence Minister Merab Kishmaria has said that the eastern front of the Abkhazian army has been partially alerted.
