Roddick through to LA Classic semis
Andy Roddick suddenly looked the master planner as the Beijing Olympic absentee posted a 6-3 6-1 victory over Marc Gicquel to reach the semi-finals of the Los Angeles Classic.
The former No.1, now ninth in the world, decided last March to bypass the Games and concentrate on the US Open starting August 26.
"It is ending up being right thing for my tennis," said the top seed, who next plays German Denis Gremelmayr in the final four.
"I'll get in two events (LA and Washington) which I needed."
Gremelmayr rallied past shaky fifth seed Marat Safin, dealing the Wimbledon semi-finalist out of contention 3-6 6-3 6-2.
Safin's momentum began to slow after he took a 5-1 lead in the first set.
It took Gremelmayr, excluded the German Olympic team, three sets to turn finally the tide.
"I made a couple of mistakes and he started to feel much more comfortable on the court - my momentum was gone," said two-time Grand Slam champion Safin.
On-fire Argentine Juan Del Potro won his 12th match in a row, defeating Amer Delic 7-6 (8-6) 6-2.
"I'm living a dream," said the 19-year-old who came to LA with clay titles last month in Stuttgart and Kitzbuehel.
"I hope I can keep up this level, now that I'm moving into the Top 20," added the 24th-ranked South American.
Del Potro will play American sixth seed Mardy Fish for a place in the final.
Fish produced a career-best West coast showing as he reached the last four 6-4 6-4 over Frenchman Florent Serra.
