BRUNEI SETS INVESTMENT SIGHTS ON MALAYSIAN ECONOMIC CORRIDORS

From Ahmad Zukiman Zain

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Dec 20 (Bernama) -- Brunei Darussalam is looking into
investing in Malaysia's economic corridors, particularly in neighbouring
Sarawak and Sabah, said its Foreign Affairs Minister Prince Mohamed Bolkiah.

Iskandar Malaysia and the East Coast Economic Region were also drawing
attention as future relations with Malaysia were promising, he said in a
just-released report of the Sultanate published by the Oxford Business Group
(OBG).

Asked to what extent had relations with Malaysia been strengthened in
recent years, he said: "Our leaders have held official talks for some time now,
so we are always looking at how we can strengthen relations and settle any
bilateral concerns.

"At the moment, I think we are moving ahead very well indeed," he said.

He noted that some Malaysian companies were working with Brunei Darussalam
on several projects.

In a related analysis, the report said a new chapter was opening in
bilateral cooperation between the two countries with the settlement of boundary
issues and a commitment to trade and mutual development.

"When His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah awarded the country's highest
honour to visiting Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak in July 2010,
the ceremony underscored the deep level of cooperation and
friendship between Brunei Darussalam and its next-door neighbour, Malaysia.

"This award came after a period marked by major progress in the resolution
of a long-standing boundary dispute, with the two governments also looking to
step up bilateral cooperation in a variety of areas, including energy, defence
and peacekeeping, and economic development," it added.

'The Report: Brunei Darussalam 2010' highlights the Sultanate's plans to
reshape the Brunei economy by shifting some of the emphasis from oil and gas to
knowledge-based downstream activities.

It provides in-depth coverage of the country's aims to boost growth in
wide-ranging sectors such as economy, information and communications technology
(ICT), Islamic financial services, education and health, in keeping with the
long-term development plan -- Wawasan Brunei 2035.(Brunei's Vision 2035)
