MALAYSIAN STATE TO COLLABORATE WITH ADELAIDE ON GREEN TECHNOLOGY

MELAKA (Malaysia), Dec 28 (Bernama) -- The Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council
(MPHTJ) will collaborate with Adelaide city in South Australia in developing
Melaka city into a green technology city.

Malacca (Malay: Melaka, dubbed The Historic State among locals) is located
in the southern region of the Malay Peninsula, on the Straits of Malacca.

Melaka Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam said the cooperation would
begin in the first quarter of next year, with MPHTJ to start developing public
amenities using green technology by the end of next year.

"Adelaide's local authorities use a lot of green technology in their
activities, and we want to adopt all that," he said after officiating at the
appointment and swearing-in of the city Mayor, and presidents and members of the
Melaka local councils for 2011 at Dewan Seri Negeri (Seri Negeri Hall) , Ayer
Keroh, here, Monday.

Mohd Ali said energy and water management using green technology should be
first to be adopted by MPHTJ for Melaka city, whereby one of the activities
would be using collected rain water to water plants.

For a start, MPHTJ will use green technology for a 324-hectare area in Gapam
here before expanding the usage to the rest of this historical city.

Mohd Ali is also attracted to the public transport management system in the
Australian city as free bus service is provided for Adelaide residents due to
the good revenue collection.

At the home front, Mohd Ali said four local authorities in Melaka managed to
collect RM207.97 million in revenue this year up to November.

Out of this amount, the Melaka Historical City Council (MBMB) contributed
RM142.94 million (US$1=RM3.13), MPHTJ RM31.12 million, Alor Gajah Municipal
Council (MPAG)RM20.83 million and Jasin Municipal Council(MPJ) RM13.08 million.

MPHTJ tops in revenue collection as it achieved 99.79 of the targeted
collection, MBMB 83 per cent, MPAG 76.59 per cent and MPJ 72.2 per cent.

Mohd Ali said the four local authorities had until Dec 17, spent RM15.54
million on various programes such as vector control, public security and
upgrading public facilities in the villages.

He said this constituted only 69.7 per cent of the RM23.31 allocation
obtained from the Housing and Local Government Ministry this year.

At the ceremony, Melaka State Development Corporation former chief executive
officer Zainal Abu was sworn in as Melaka Historical City Mayor, replacing
Yusof Jantan who took over his post at the state corporation.

Former MPHTJ secretary Sapiah Haron took her oath as MPHTJ president,
replacing Kamarudin Md Shah who was appointed president of MPAG.

Twenty-four council members of MBMB, 24 of MPHTJ, 24 of MPAG and 25 of MPJ
were also sworn in today. Their appointments are effective Jan 1.
