NO OBJECTION TO MORE DOMESTIC WORKERS FROM NEPAL
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 29 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has no objection to increase the number of domestic workers from Nepal, said Human Resource Minister Dr S. Subramaniam.
However, he said Nepal should ensure that such workers were suitable to work
in Malaysia, especially with regard to language, skills and others.
"If they can prepare them for the task and our employers are prepared to
employ them, it should be okay," he told reporters after a bilateral meeting
with Nepal's Labour and Transport Minister Muhammad Aftab Alam here, Tuesday.
Subramaniam said to date, there are about 175,810 Nepalese working in
Malaysia and 84 of them are employed as domestic workers.
He also said that the government was still looking at the memorandum of
understanding (MoU) on the recruitment of labour from Nepal.
"We will continue looking at it because the government is looking in terms
of foreign worker recruitment to be more on a government to government basis.
So when we go along the move there will be a need for us to have arrangements
with the source countries in either formal or informal agreement," he said.
He said the government would try to facilitate the MoU as rapidly as
possible and expected it to be signed by both countries before the end of next
year.
Meanwhile, Muhammad Aftab said Nepal wished to bring in more skilled and
professional workers to Malaysia and widen the sectors they were working
currently.
"We expect Nepali workers will get opportunities in other sectors. We have
discussed some different issues...MoU, health sector, manufacturing and
vocational training," he said.
Muhammad Aftab and his delegation are in Malaysia to attend celebrations in
conjunction with 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
In another development, Subramaniam advised container lorry drivers at Port
Klang who were sacked by employer without valid reason to lodge a report with
the Manpower Department.
He said the report was necessary to enable the department to take the
necessary action.
"If it is true there is injustice, we will take action against the
employer," he added.
He was commenting on a report which claimed that Multimodal Freight Sdn Bhd
(MMF) in Port Klang had sacked 49 of its container drivers without valid reason.
