embarked on a mission to break the record in the Malaysia Book of Records

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 3 (Bernama) -- Two Malaysian triathlete champions in 2006 have embarked on a mission to break the record in the Malaysia Book of Records for the longest-distance cycling by a duo covering Malaysia and Brunei in 29 days.

The record-breaking attempt is also an effort by Stephanie Chok, 29, and Heidilee Mohamad, 27, to create public awareness on safe driving and greening the earth.

Heidilee, who takes on the role of steer, said the expedition was also aimed at creating interest among Malaysians to take up cycling as a lifestyle activity, and awareness among bicycle enthusiasts to wear proper attire and protection gear while cycling.

"Both of us had met with a horrible accident before....our bones were broken. That is why we want to let people know about road safety and at the same time, make them more conscious about protecting the environment," he told reporters before they were flagged off by Universal Fitness and Leisure (UFL) managing director Radha Krishnan, here, Monday.

Heidilee said they both hoped to break the existing record of 4,547km by cycling a distance of 5,457km, an increase of 910km or 20 per cent.

Their expedition will end in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah on Jan 31.

Chok, who takes on the role of stoker, said they targeted to cover 200km daily and would be stopping for a break at 5pm before continuing their journey the next morning.

Asked on their preparations, she said they had been training using the tendem bicycle since early December to ensure they were comfortable using them.
