INJURY CRASHES COST THE UAE 20 BLN DIRHAMS ANNUALLY
DUBAI, Jan 4 (Bernama) -- Research shows that injury crashes in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have been estimated to cost the country about 20 billion dirhams (about RM16.7 billion) annually. (US$1=RM3.06)
This Gulf nation also sees about 10,000 crashes annually, leading to about 2.7
fatalities per day.
The study indicated that traffic congestion remained one of the major challenges
of road transportation in the UAE, with nearly 10.5 billion dirhams (about RM8.7
billion) wasted annually on congestion.
It was conducted by the Roadway, Transportation and Traffic Safety Research
Centre. Its findings were revealed during the 14th Gulf Engineering Forum held
recently in Dubai.
According to UAE Society of Engineers chairman Essa Al Maidoor, the UAE had on
average a relatively high percentage of vehicles per person and a low dependency
on public transport.
"This increases the challenges of congestion in the country," he said.
