21 M'SIANS RECEIVE 2011 AUSTRALIAN ENDEAVOUR AWARDS

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 8 (Bernama) -- Twenty-one outstanding Malaysians have been
awarded the Australian Endeavour Awards worth RM7 million (US$2.28 million) this
year, the highest since the scholarship was introduced in 2007.

Of the number, three have successfully clinched the Prime Minister's
Australia Asia Endeavour Postgraduate Award, a top scholarship that was only
awarded to 20 distinguished students annually worldwide.

Australian High Commissioner Miles Kupa, when presenting the awards at his
residence here, said Friday the scholarship was part of the continuation of the
Colombo Plan initiated 1950, to support outstanding individuals in pursuit of
academia and professional excellence in Australia.

The awards are funded by the Australian Government.

This year's group of scholars will study in areas such as community
health, veterinary parasites and public policy.

Apart from the Prime Minister's Australia Asia Endeavour Postgraduate
Award,
other categories of the scholarship are Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Research
Fellowship, Endeavour Vocational Education & Training (VET) Awards,
Prime Minister's Endeavour Executive Awards, Endeavou Postgraduate Awards and
Endeavour Research Fellowships.

A recipient of the Prime Minister's Australia Asia Endeavour Postgraduate
Award, Dr Azalea Hani Othman, 26, said she was honoured to receive the award.

She will pursue her doctorate (PhD) in Haematology and Biochemistry in
animals at the University of Queensland. She leaves for Australia next week.

Another recipient, winner of the 2011 Endeavour Vocational Education &
Training (VET) Awards, is yoga therapist Alicia Shu Pei Wong.

The 32-year-old has won a three-year scholarship to pursue advanced diploma
in Naturopathy at the Australasian College of Natural Therapies.

Since 2007, 62 Malaysians have benefitted from the Australian scholarships.
