IMMIGRATION DEPT PLANS TO INTRODUCE APPS TO VET FOREIGNERS
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 8 (Bernama) -- The Immigration Department plans to
introduce the Advance Passengers Processing System (APPS) to vet foreigners,
said its director-general Alias Ahmad.
He said the department would be making a proposal on the matter to the
Home Ministry in view of the fact the application had been implemented in
several advanced countries.
The system could help curb transborder crimes like money laundering, drug
and human trafficking, he said in a statement here Friday.
He also said the department would be improving security features in
Malaysian travel documents which would enlist the use of new techonology like
polycarbonate features in the Malaysian passport.
"By introducing e-visas, we will also be able to eradicate the problem of
visa falsification," he said, adding that the department would also be
implementing the biometric system for reading passports of foreigners.
Besides these, he said the department also planned to be a member of the
International Civil Aviation Organisation which would help it forge greater
cooperation with many countries in detecting fake passports and other travel
documents.
