PULAU TUBA, SELAT BAGAN NYIOR TO BE MADE FISHERY HAVENS
Zulkafli (pd)
LANGKAWI (Malaysia), Jan 9 (Bernama) -- The agriculture and agro-based
industry ministry plans to turn Pulau Tuba and Selat Bagan Nyior near Pulau
Dayang Bunting in Langkawi as fishery havens for anglers and fishermen.
Langkawi, the Jewel of Kedah, is an archipelago of 99 islands in the Andaman
Sea, some 30 km off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia. The islands are
a part of the state of Kedah, which is adjacent to the Thai border.
In view of that, Deputy Minister Johari Baharom said, the
state fisheries department had set up three fish traps worth about RM100,000
(US$32,551) at separate locations in the vicinity of Pulau Tuba and Selat Bagan
Nyior.
He said the three units would serve as 'homes' for fish fry and where fish
could seek shelter.
He hoped such facilities would enable Pulau Tuba residents and fishermen
to
increase their income.
Johari was speaking at a news conference after launching the Pulau Tuba
Fishery Community Resource Management monitoring and recreation centre here
Sunday.
