USIM-MAWHIBA SIGN MOU TO SEND PERMATA INSAN PARTICIPANTS TO SAUDI ARABIA

RIYADH, Jan 11 (Bernama) - Participants of the Permata Insan programme,
implemented by Islamic Science University of Malaysia (USIM), will have the
opportunity to come to Saudi Arabia for a student exchange programme, which is
made possible by the cooperation established between USIM and the King Abdulaziz
and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba).

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the matter was signed by USIM
vice-chancelor Prof Dr Muhamad Muda and Mawhiba deputy secretary-general
Dr Mahmoud M. Najadi, here, Monday.

The ceremony was witnessed by the Malaysian prime minister's wife Rosmah
Mansor, who chairs the Permata Negara policy working committee.

Permata Insan was inspired by Rosmah with the aim of guiding gifted students
as young as eight years to master the Quran and Sunnah and relate them
to science, mathematics and technology in Arabic, English or the Malay language.

Speaking to Malaysian reporters, Rosmah said the MoU was proof that the
comittee was serious in implementing the Permata Negara and Permata Insan
programmes.

"I am very pleased and welcome such a cooperation because what we emphasise
and prioritise all this while is recognised by the government of Saudi Arabia
under the patronage of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz," she said.

Rosmah also called for further discussion between USIM and Mawhiba to learn
from each other's experience and expertise, as well as address weaknesses.

Besides the exchange of students, the MoU is also expected to enhance the
teaching and learning skills and foster sharing of information and knowledge
in managing the talents and potential of gifted children between the two
institutions involved.

Prior to this, USIM had also established networking and cooperation with
Taibah University in Madinah to strengthen the implementation of the Permata
Insan programme.

On the final day of her three-day visit to Saudi Arabia today, Rosmah also
visited Riyadh Smart Schools for Boys and Girls, which were established to
produce leaders for the future.

Rosmah's visit to Saudi Arabia was at the invitation of Saudi Arabian
Deputy
Minister of Education Noura Abdullah Al-Fayez to deliver a keynote address
at the First International Conference on Total Quality Management in Education
K-12.

The delegation comprised National Universiti, Malaysia vice-chancellor
Prof Dr Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hasan Shahabudin, Sultan Idris University of
Education vice-chancellor Prof Dr Aminah Ayob and 10 members of the
Welfare Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers (Bakti).

Rosmah departed for home from the Royal Terminal of King Khalid
International Airport at about 2pm local time (7pm Malaysian time).
