19 M`SIAN ATHLETES TO TAKE PART IN ASIAN WINTER GAMES

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will send 19 athletes from two sports
associations to participate in the seventh Asian Winter Games which will be held
at Astana-Almaty, Kazakhstan, from Jan 30 to Feb 6.

Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) honorary secretary Sieh Kok Chi said 15 ice
hockey players from Malaysia Ice Hockey Federation and four skaters from Ice
Skating Association of Malaysia will go to Kazakhstan on their own expenses.

"They will take part in the ice hockey and figure skating events," he told
Bernama Tuesday.

He said Malaysia's best chance to grab a medal was in ice hockey as the events
would be divided into two categories, one for countries which experience winter
and the other for those which did not.

"In the previous edition, in Changchun, China, in 2007, they (the Malaysian ice
hockey team playing in the second category) grabbed the eighth spot out of 11
participating teams.

"But then they improved their performance and have secured either second or
third place in other international tournaments," he said.

Sieh said the ice hockey team's toughest rival were the United Arab Emirates
(UAE) and Thailand.

He also said that the Malaysian figure skaters would face a daunting task since they have to compete with other skaters, especially those from countries which experience winter.
