Ahmad Fuad Yahya

JAKARTA, Jan 13 (Bernama) -- Apart from ensuring 2011 be marked with significant
progress in achieving the Asean Community, Indonesia as Asean Chair, will also
start the deliberation on post-2015 vision for an Asean Community in a global
community of nations.

Indonesia's Foreign Minister Dr Marty Natalegawa said it would be among the
priorities of Asean under its chairmanship.

"Ahead, as we realised the vision of an Asean Community, there is a
compelling need for Asean to chart its contribution to the global
community of nations.

"Based and building on its basic principles and ideals, not least as contained
in its charter, to develop a common Asean platform on global issues," he said.

Speaking at the hand-over ceremony of the chairmanship of the Committee of
Permanent Representatives (CPR) to Asean, at the Asean Secretariat here
Wednesday, the minister also stressed on the need for the CPR to contribute more
to make Asean directly beneficial and more meaningful to its people.

"The CPR must continue pushing forward the implementation of the three pillars
of the Asean Community. The CPR must also be in the forefront of maintaining
Asean centrality," he said.

With the CPR working with diligence and in close cooperation with the
secretariat, Dr Marty was confident that it would be another fruitful year for
Asean.

During the symbolic transfer of leadership of CPR to Asean, the Deputy Permanent
Representative of Vietnam to Asean Nguyen Duc Thang, handed over a torch replica
and a carved wooden hammer, symbolising the CPR Chairmanship, to the Permanent
Representative of Indonesia to Asean I Gede Ngurah Swajaya.

As stipulated in the Asean Charter, a member state assuming the Asean
Chairmanship shall chair the Asean Summit and related summits, the Asean
Coordinating Council, the three Asean Community Councils, relevant Asean
Sectoral Ministerial Bodies and senior officials, in addition to the CPR.

Earlier when opening the ceremony, Asean Secretary-General Dr Surin Pitsuwan had
praised and thanked Vietnam for its effective leadership and commendable work
last year.

He also thanked Indonesia for its tremendous enthusiasm in accepting the
responsibilities from Vietnam.
