FOREIGN MINISTRY CONFIRMS NO M'SIAN CASUALTIES IIN QUEENSLAND FLOOD DISASTER
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 15 (Bernama) -- The Foreign Ministry said Friday that the
Malaysian High Commission in Canberra had confirmed that there has been no
reports of death or injury involving Malaysians as a result of the flood
disaster in Queensland, Australia and that all Malaysians living in the affected
areas are safe.
In a statement here, the ministry said the situation there was beginning to
ease as floodwaters were slowly subsiding while cleanup and rebuilding efforts
were underway.
It said that Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak had sent a sympathy
message to Australia's premier Julia Gillard, conveying Malaysia's support and
condolences to the people of Australia over lives lost in the disaster.
Foreign Minister Anifah Aman had also conveyed a sympathy message
to his Australian counterpart Kevin Rudd, expressing his condolences to families
of flood victims, the statement said, adding that the ministry would continue to
monitor the aftermath of floods in Queensland, Australia and keep in close
contact with students and other Malaysians in the affected areas.
"Our mission in Canberra is also coordinating with other Malaysian
government agencies and local authorities in Australia to ensure the safety and
welfare of Malaysians there," the statement said.
It also said the Foreign Ministry had activated contact lines as focal
points for the public to seek information on the latest flood situation in
Australia.
