FOUNDATION PROMOTING BATIK AND SONGKET TO MIDDLE EAST

KUALA TERENGGANU (Terengganu, Malaysia), Jan 17 (Bernama) -- After Europe, the
east coast state of Terengganu Entrepreneur Development Foundation is looking to
the Middle East to promote batik and songket (gold-thread hand-woven fabric).

Foundation general manager Azmi Razik said Sunday the idea was to popularise
Terengganu batik and songket to the world.

A delegation sent to Spain, Italy and England had received good response, he
told reporters after opening the seminar on the marketing of Terengganu batik
and songket in Europe here.

Several well known people in the garment industry of the cities that the
delegation visited last year expressed interest in using batik and songket in
their creations, he said.

"Middle east countries are next," he said, adding that the state government was
encouraging overseas marketing.

The one-day seminar was for the batik and songket entrepreneurs to get
information on the market potential of the products in several countries.
