SCB PLANS 33 PER CENT INCREASE IN SUCCESSFUL BIDS NEXT YEAR
KUCHING (Sarawak, Malaysia), Jan 17 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak Convention Bureau
(SCB) plans to increase its number of successful bids by 33 per cent next year
due to its excellent track record in this area and growing international
awareness of the state in East Malsia as an emerging international meeting
destination.
Chief executive officer Jill Henry said, the company last year, secured a total
of 42 conventions and is expected to deliver 97,390 delegate days to the state
between 2010 and 2016.
"The SCB has a very high bidding rate success of 80 percent. When we add federal
support into the mix, it takes our chances of success even higher, she said in a
statement here Monday.
She also said the 42 conventions are anticipated to generate RM54,293,140 in
delegate expenditure and cover a wide range of topics, from education,
engineering, health, orthodontics, urology to medicine and Information
Technology. (US$1=RM3.05)
Some of the conventions won included the Borneo International Culinary &
Hospitality Week 2012 to be held from March 1-3 next year with 3,000 delegates.
Also to be staged, is the 4th World Conference in Science and Technology
Education from June 10-14, 2013 (1,000 delegates) and the 10th Congress Asia
Pacific Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand from October 1-4, 2014
(1,000 delegates).
Jill expressed confidence that the conventions would position Sarawak as a
competitive new destination and boost the country's growing reputation as a
meeting, incentives, conference and exhibition (MICE) destination globally.
Meanwhile, SCB chairman Dr. Muhammad Leo Michael Toyad said, the
organisation welcomed the new federal subvention funding being made available
through the Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB).
"We will be working very closely with MyCEB so that our convention hosts can now
access both federal and state government funding support, to help them bid for
international conventions to be held here," he added.
Since the SCB was formed in 2006, the bureau has also picked up nine
international marketing and promotion awards in major international competitions
such as the Diamond Award 2008 in ITB Berlin, Germany and the Gold Camera Award
2008 in Los Angeles, United States.
