HIGH RUBBER PRICE HELPS ADDRESS POVERTY

MACHANG (Kelantan, Malaysia), Jan 18 (Bernama) -- The high price of rubber will
help eradicate poverty among 350,000 smallholders nationwide, said Rubber
Industry Smallholders' Development Authority (Risda) chairman Abdul Rahim Thamby
Chik.

He said with rubber trading at RM15 per kg, smallholders can expct to earn more
than RM2,000 monthly, above the RM750 poverty level. (US$1=RM3.05)

"Rubber smallholders can earn up to RM3,000 monthly soon. This is on par with
the salary earned by some civil servants."

Rahim reminded them not to be buoyed by the high price of the commodity as it is
susceptible to the changing weather conditions.

The high price of rubber also prompted Risda to postpone its replanting scheme
as it is uneconomical.

"We need four years for the replanting scheme and this will affect the income of
smallholders," he added.
