GOVT EXTENDS EMERGENCY DECREE IN SOUTHERN THAILAND
BANGKOK, Jan 19 (Bernama) – The Thai Cabinet Tuesday extended the state of
emergency in southern Thailand which has been enforced since 2004, for another
three months.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said the extension would take effect from Jan
20 until April 19.
The extension covers all districts in Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat except Mae
Lan district in Pattani where the government lifted the emergency decree
recently as its pilot project when normalcy returned.
"It is necessary to extend the emergency decree in other areas but I will ask
the Cabinet to reconsider the decision if the situation warrants it," he said
after chairing the weekly Cabinet meeting, here.
More than 4,000 people had died since suspected separatists resumed their armed
campaign to seek independence for the three southern provinces seven years ago.
