OMANI DEPUTY PM EXPECTS MORE OMAN-MALAYSIA EXCHANGES

By Muin Abdul Majid

MUSCAT, Jan 19 (Bernama) -- Oman's Deputy Prime Minister Sayyid Fahad Bin Mahmood Al-Said said Tuesday that the visit by Rosmah Mansor to the sultanate would pave the way for more exchanges of visits and cooperation at all levels between the Gulf nation and Malaysia.

He said Malaysia was one of the countries which Oman was proud to have relations
with.

"I think exchanges of visits at all levels between our two countries are very
important. As it is, a lot of Omanis visit Malaysia every year.

"And they feel at home in Malaysia as Oman and Malaysia share many
similarities in terms of religion, development and the friendliness of the people of
our two countries," said Sayyid Fahad.

He said this during an audience granted to Rosmah, wife of Malaysian Prime
Minister Najib Razak, that lasted for over an hour at the Council of Ministers
in the Omani capital.

Rosmah, who is on a four-day visit to Oman, and the deputy prime minister
exchanged views on a number of topics, including women empowerment and
children-related issues.

Sayyid Fahad said he was impressed with the pace of development taking place in
Malaysia.

Rosmah, meanwhile, extended warm greetings on behalf of Najib to the Omani
deputy prime minister.

She concurred with Sayyid Fahad's observation that Malaysia and Oman shared many
similarities, adding that the Southeast Asian country could also learn from
Oman's experience in nation-building.

Rosmah is visiting the sultanate as a guest of the government of Oman.

She has the distinction of being the first Malaysian dignitary in 20 years to
have been accorded that status. The then Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King), Sultan
Azlan Shah, visited Oman back in 1991.

Members of her delegation were pleasantly surprised and humbled by their Omani
hosts' warm reception and generous hospitality that, according to one of them,
went beyond expectations.

"This may well be a reflection of the closeness of ties between Oman and
Malaysia," said another observer.

Earlier in the day, Rosmah visited Muscat's beautiful Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque
that can accommodate more than 20,000 worshippers.

A major feature of the interior is the handmade Persian carpet which covers the
entire floor of the main prayer hall in a single piece.

Covering an area of 4,263 sq metres, it is one of the largest in the world.

The carpet was woven in the eastern Iranian province of Khurasan by 600 women
weavers. It took four years to produce the carpet.

In the visitors' book, Rosmah wrote: "Congratulations for having this beautiful
and magnificent mosque -- the pride of Oman".

She also visited a childcare centre run by Oman's Social Development Ministry
where she presented a donation of 2,000 Omani rials to the facility.
