SINGAPORE SEIZES S$10.4 MILLION WORTH OF DRUGS IN 2010
SINGAPORE, Jan 25 (Bernama) – Singapore’s Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB)
seized an estimated $10.4 million worth of drugs last year, approximately $3.7
million more than in 2009.
CNB said Monday the increase in drug seizure could be partly attributed to
the increased supply of heroin and methamphetamine in the region, as well as
sustained intensive enforcement, in particular at Singapore’s checkpoints.
In a statement, CNB said the number of joint operations with the
city-state’s other security agencies at the checkpoints also increased from 436
to 890 in 2010, an increase of 104 per cent.
However, CNB said fewer or 1,772 drug abusers were arrested last year
compared to 1,883 in 2009.
The bureau added that heroin and methamphetamine continued to be the top two
drugs abused in the island republic.
