UPM DOCTORATE STUDENT COMES UP WITH PRODUCT TO DETECT HEPATITIS B
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 27 (Bernama) -- A post-graduate student pursuing a doctorate in philosophy (PhD) in Genetic Engineering and Biology at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has succeeded in producing a research product to detect Hepatitis B.
Yap Wei Boon came up with the product named 'Histag Hepatitis B
Core Antigen' through the chromatography process, which is the separation of antigen found in the bacteria which could boost the body's immunisation.
Yap, 27, discovered the antigen while carrying out a study to produce antigen which was much cheaper compared to the imported product.
"It is cheap because the process to produce the antigen is much easier compared to the existing method," he said in a statement issued by the UPM, here Wednesday.
Following the discovery, Yap has been declared as a champion at the Merck Young Scientist Award 2010 (MYSA) for the chromatography category and received a cash prize of RM5,000 (US$1,637).
