SOLUTIA TO DOUBLE PRODUCTION CAPACITY AT KUANTAN FACILITY
By Manik Mehta
NEW YORK, Jan 27 (Bernama) -- St Louis, Missouri-based Solutia Inc plans to
expand its current Crysler insoluble sulfur operations at its Kuantan facility
as part of its plan to remain the leading global supplier of insoluble
sulfur.
This will double current capacity, making its Kuantan plant the largest
insoluble sulfur manufacturing facility in the world.
Kuantan is the capital of Malaysia's east cost state of Pahang.
According to company sources, Kuantan was picked after a rigorous selection
process, which recognised the site’s efficient operations, quality workforce and
ability to serve the rapidly growing markets of China and India.
This is an indication of a future trend which will see Malaysia assuming a
key role in serving as a base from where other companies will also cater to the
Asian region, the sources said.
Greta Senn, president and general manager of Solutia’s technical specialties
division, said tyre manufacturing has seen a tremendous migration into Asia, as
the company's strategic partners and customers continued to add resources and
capacity in this growing region.
"As the long-term global leader in insoluble sulfur innovation and
technology, we remain committed to providing products with demonstrable
performance advantage and serving our customers worldwide," he said
Solutia currently produces Crystex insoluble sulfur at seven locations
around the world, including at facilities in Kuantan.
"This (capacity) expansion will allow us to build on the proven success of
the Kuantan facility and further strengthen the company’s reliability of supply
in the broader Asia-Pacific region," he said.
Crystex insoluble sulfur is the vulcanising agent for critical applications
in the tyre industy. In addition, Crystex high dispersion insoluble sulfur
offers the manufacturers improved productivity and safety in their manufacturing
processes, the company claimed.
The company has global operations and has a workforce of 3,400 employees in
more than 50 worldwide locations.
