MALAYSIANS IN EGYPT EXPECTED TO BE EVACUATED WITHIN FOUR-AND-A-HALF DAYS

KOTA KINABALU (Sabah, Malaysia), Feb 2 (Bernama) -- All Malaysian students
in Egypt, which has been rocked by violent protests seeking an end to President
Hosni Mubarak's rule, are expected to be evacuated within four-and-a-half days.

Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said the Malaysian government was serious about
bringing its citizens out of Egypt and had made special arrangements to fly them
out of Cairo to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.

Aside from the three C-130 transport aircraft belonging to the Malaysian air
force leaving for Egypt Wednesday, he said a special AirAsia Airbus A320 plane,
which could accommodate 249 passengers, was also scheduled to leave for Cairo
from KL International Airport Wednesday, he said.

Among those onboard the AirAsia plane are Minister in the Prime Minister's
Department Jamil Khir Baharom, Chief Executive Officer of Tabung Haji (Malaysian
Haj pilgrims fund board) Ismee Ismail and Putera Umno chief Abdul Azeez Abdul
Rahim, who are on a mission to help bring home Malaysian students from the
troubled country.

"The aircraft would also bring along foodstuff for Malaysian students in
Egypt," he told reporters, here.

Anifah said another Malaysia Airlines plane, a Boeing 747, which can carry
up to 285 passengers, would fly to Cairo at 9am Thursday..

"We expect to fly out at least 3,000 Malaysians from Cairo to Jeddah every
day and hope all the Malaysian students there could be evacuated within
four-and-a-half days," he said.

He said the government was now arranging temporary visas with the Saudi
Arabian government to enable evacuation of students to Jeddah.

He said there were more than 11,000 Malaysian students in Egypt.

Anifah also said that the Malaysian and Indonesian governments were working
very closely in the evacuation process.

"For example, Malaysia Airlines or AirAsia plane can take in Indonesians
stranded at the airport if they have extra seats," he said.

Anifah also advised parents with children in Egypt to remain calm as the
situation there was under control, and assured them that the government was
doing its best to protect them.
