Malaysia discuss with Universities on Malaysian Students Return to Egypt

SEPANG (Bernama) - The government will discuss with the
management of universities in Egypt on the date for Malaysian students to return
to the country to continue their studies.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Jamil Khir Baharom
said that so far, most of the universities could not say when they would re-open
due to the turmoil in the country.

"So, most matters have to be handled by the Higher Education Ministry, the
Malaysian Students Department, the embassy and relevant parties.

"They have to coordinate information to be used as a reference by students
on when they can return to Egypt to continue their studies," he added.

He told this to reporters Monday after arriving at the KL International
Airport together with the first group of 778 Malaysian citizens, including
students, who were evacuated from Egypt.

Present at the airport to welcome home the Malaysian citizens was Prime
Minister Najib Tun Razak.

Jamil Khir said that as for now, it was better that the students to get
confirmation from the relevant parties on their return to Egypt.

Asked on the number of Malaysian citizens still in Egypt, he said he could
not give the exact number.

"We cannot force them (to return to Malaysia). They decide not to come back
because they feel the condition there is better and some are working," he added.

He advised Malaysians who were still in Egypt to contact the Malaysian
Embassy in Cairo should they have any problems or want to come home.

In a related development, Higher Education Minister Mohamed
Khaled Nordin said the ministry would discuss with universities in Egypt on the
possibility of allowing the Malaysian students who had returned home to sit for
their examinations in the country.

He said there were 1,200 medical students, comprising 1,000 students from
the University of Tanta and 200 students from Al-Azhar University, due to sit
for their examination scheduled on Feb 12.

"If the universities agree, the ministry will arrange for the affected
students to sit for their examination at local universities," he told reporters
after welcoming home the first group of Malaysian citizens in Egypt at KLIA here
Monday.

He said there were about 11,000 Malaysian students in Egypt, with 5,000 of
them taking medical studies and the remaining religious studies.
