AIPU OPENS IN DOHA
Doha (QNA) - Under the patronage of HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the 17th Arab Inter Parliamentary Union (AIPU) Conference opened in Doha Monday with the participation of Arab parliaments' speakers and a number of their excellences Qatari ministers and representatives of international and regional organizations.
In his speech HE the Speaker of the Advisory Council Mohamed Bin Mubarak Al-Kholaifi thanked HH the Emir for patronizing the conference, which shows how the great support the Emir to the parliamentary work which prompt us to do more work for our countries and peoples, he said.
The Palestinian cause was in the throes of a serious juncture in history which required Arab parliamentarians to demand the international community to take the necessary measures to protect the unarmed Palestinian people against the fierce Israeli violations, al Kholaifi said.
He also called for support of the just cause of the Palestinian people, for lifting the oppressive siege on Gaza and for doubling efforts to achieve inter-Palestinian conciliation.
Al Kholaifi said international legality is required to work towards establishing just peace that secures the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people , including their right to establish a state of their own , with Jerusalem as its capital.
He noted that Qatar, under the leadership of HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa al Thani
has been seeking to strengthen peace and stability in the region , integrity of Arab ranks and ironing
out differences through hosting conferences , on the regional and international level, and through
participation in foreign forums.
Issues of democracy and human rights are among the most important topics debated on the international level, he said. .Their importance was a reflection of the current social, economic, and political changes in the world, he said.
Al Kholaifi expressed the hope that participants deliberations will be crowned with resolutions strengthening Arab legislative councils.
Chairman of the Arab Inter Parliamentary Union Salim Al Zaanoun praised Qatar for hosting the conference and reviewed the activities of the conference's presidency in 2010 which abided by the union's principles and objectives.
He referred to the union's progress of work last year which centered on the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip and on the situation in Jerusalem.
He said the union followed up a request it presented to the international parliamentary union assembly in Bangkok on Israel's judaization of Jerusalem.
The Arab Inter Parliamentary Union discusses over two days a host of issues, inter alia the present Arab situation and the role of Arab parliamentarians in restoring Arab solidarity and stability.
