Investor confidence buoys VN-Index

Hanoi, Aug 15 (VNA) - Investor confidence continued to drive the stock market up, albeit modestly, for the third session this week.

The VN-Index on August 13 grew just 0.09 percent to 464.01, a rise of 4.12 points. Trading volume stayed at 20.03 million shares, worth 705.65 billion VND (42.77 million USD).

STB of Sacombank was the main contributor to the day's trading, which at its height saw 4.31 million STB shares change hands.

DPM of Phu My Fertilisers was the next heaviest traded stock, with 1.67 million shares changing hands, followed by HPG of Hoa Phat Group, which traded 1.42 millions shares.

Familiar names such as DHG of Hau Giang Pharmaceuticals, BMC of Binh Dinh Minerals and TCT of Tay Ninh Cable Tour remained the biggest gainers on August 13.

REE of Refrigeration, Electrical, Engineering Corp on August 13 became the biggest loser when it shed 26.5 percent of its share price to end up at 27,200 VND. August 13 was the firm's ex-right date for dividend payments.

At the end of the session, the number of sliding codes increased to 54, compared to 10 losing codes on Tuesday.

"Investors began selling more as they considered it a good time to earn a profit. Furthermore, the gold price is staying low in the domestic market, making investors reluctant to trade in it," said Nguyen Quang Tung, from HCM City Securities Corporation's Ha Noi branch.

Tung added that advantageous factors in the general economy had encouraged investors to trade in securities.

"The money finally comes back to the stock market because the stock exchange is showing healthy signs," said John Nolan, an analyst with a HCM City fund management company.

Nolan added that investors would soon realised the risks of trading in gold, which is unpredictable at the movement.

This sector on August 13 was active, with 2.42 million shares being bought and 2.62 million shares being sold.

This sector focused on buying shares such as PPC of Pha Lai Thermal Power, PET of PetroVietnam Tourism and Services and DPM.

In Hanoi , the HASTC-Index gained 2.22 percent to finish at 142.64. The northern bourse saw 9.40 million shares traded, worth 312.21 billion VND (18.92 million USD).-Enditem
