ABHISIT TO CALL UN SEC-GEN TUESDAY NIGHT

BY JAMALUDDIN MUHAMMAD

BANGKOK, Feb 9 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva will call United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Tuesday night to explain Bangkok's side of the story related to its recent clashes with Phnom Penh.

"I will call the UN Secretary-General at 8pm (Malaysian time: 9pm)," he told
reporters after chairing a National Security Council meeting, here.

The premier said he would explain to the UN Chief that Thai troops had never
attacked Cambodian troops first as claimed by Phnom Penh.

"We had also never attacked civilians," he said.

The telephone call is in addition to the letter sent by Bangkok to the
United Nations Security Council yesterday detailing what happened during the
clashes.

Phnom Penh too sent a letter to the UN Security Council on Sunday.

Abhisit said he would also tell Ban that more than 10,000 Thais had been
displaced as a result of four days of clashes since last Friday at the disputed
border area.

Two Thai soldiers and a civilian were killed while 24 other soldiers were
injured during the clashes which saw both sides using heavy weapons including
mortars, rockets and machine guns.

Both countries have been at loggerheads over an area of 4.6km square which
has yet to be demarcated near the Preah Vihear Temple, including an area leading
to the temple's entrance and its surrounding.

The International Court of Justice ruled in 1962 that the 11th century
temple was located in Cambodia and in 2008 it was listed as a World Heritage
site by Unesco.

Abhisit also said that would also explain Bangkok's position that the
settlement of the recent clashes and disputed border issues should be done
bilaterally with Phnom Penh.

He said Thai Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Suwit
Khunkitti would highlight to the World Heritage Committee on the misuse of the
temple as a base to launch attacks during the clashes by Phnom Penh.

"It obviously contradicts with the temple's role as a world heritage site
as outlined by Unesco," said Abhisit.
