UM CHOSEN TO BENEFIT FROM LATEST CARL ZEISS TECHNOLOGY

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 11 (Bernama) -- The University of Malaya's (UM) Faculty of
Medicine will be the first in Malaysia to use the latest technology by the
world's leading optical and opto-electronic industries company, Carl Zeiss.

UM Vice-Chancellor Dr Gauth Jasmon said through the Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) inked Thursday, UM's research efforts will benefit from the
latest in quality equipment from the company well-known in the field of optical
microscopy.

"Our medical faculty will be able to fully utilise the latest and most
sophisticated microscopy equipment needed by the university in their hopes to
be included in the world's top-100 list of best universities by 2015.

"This agreement is important to UM in efforts to improve the quality of
research with help from Carl Zeiss," he told Bernama when met after the MoU
signing ceremony between UM and Carl Zeiss Malaysia, here Thursday.

Meanwhile, Regional Managing Director of Carl Zeiss in South East Asia and
India Ven Raman said under the agreement, the university will provide research
scientists on the environment and Carl Zeiss will contribute the most updated
technology available by equipping the university with the newest in microscopy
systems on a rotation basis.
"Being a foundation, Carl Zeiss takes pride in our continuous investment and
contribution to developing new technologies. The new technology from Zeiss will
provide the tools for scientists to apply in their research.

"Our aim is to promote research and education in the scientific and medical
communities at the university and foster the spirit of knowledge sharing in
their specific activities," he said.

He added that aside from sharing technology and know-how, the microscope
systems provided by Carl Zeiss and the education environment from the university
also served as an excellent training ground for Malaysia's future
scientists.
